Our Wet Carpet Remediation process includes the following steps:

  • Initial Evaluation – This step includes an assessment of the type of water that has caused the water damage. Identifying the source and type of water will help identify what steps are needed. This will be completed usually within 5 minutes of site attendance
  • Water Extraction – The next step is to extract as much standing water as possible from the carpets. By completing this step, we can dramatically reduce the time taken to dry and reduce the likelihood of the occurrence of mould.
  • Introduce air flow – While water extraction removes a bulk of the water, the remaining water will need to evaporate to avoid malodor and mould sets in. We achieve this by installing our air movers on-site in an optimal way to increase evaporation across all surfaces.
  • Introduce dehumidification – When the evaporation occurs from air movement, the water in the air needs to be removed from the environment, so the air can yet again evaporate more water from materials. This is achieved by the installation of dehumidifiers. In Australia, it is likely for the relative humidity of the ambient air to be around or above 60% RH, by using dehumidifiers to lower this, we are effectively increasing the speed of drying, by allowing the air to take on more water.
  • Post drying moisture testing – Once a period of drying is completed, it is important to confirm that the carpet is dry. While it may be dry to the touch, the carpet is multilayered and maybe still be wet underneath the surface. It is important to test with a moisture metre to confirm that the carpet, underlay and subfloor underneath has dried
  • Carpet cleaning – Depending on the type of water, or if the carpet has seen some staining from the event, we will provide a carpet cleaning service to bring the carpet to a pre-event condition.

In Action

NLR were called into a water damage situation, in a Redlands two-story home. The solar hot water system, located on the roof leaked through the roof tiling, and into the attic void space. Approximately 1m2 of carpet and underlay underneath was category 2 water affected. It is important to dry these water-affected areas, as it will create a conducive environment for mould growth. Considering the water spread, new life technicians placed down 1 dehumidifier and 3 air movers to target both the carpet and underlay underneath and the ceiling above.
